A Weekend Getaway Day 2: Nkhudzi Bay, Mangochi, Malawi

This post is a continuation from the previous post. If you haven't read it go on and read it here first then come back to continue.

DAY 2 (Saturday): EXPLORING THE BEACH AND THE WATER

We spotted the sunrise from our chalet and decided to quickly go out and take it all in at the beach.

It was so beautiful!

Then we had to get creative to take a photo of us together without a tripod.

Enter the stones.

We sandwiched the phone between these stones

And it worked out.

Look at our early morning sleepy faces 😀

And isn’t Mane’s t-shirt so fitting? It was so quiet and peaceful at the beach at this hour of the day.

After some time we thought it would be great to get into the water while the beach was still nearly deserted and quiet. So we went back in to change and came out to play in the lake!

So much fun.

After a while I got cold and tried getting warm with the morning sun but it wasn’t working so we decided it was just time to go back in.

We showered and changed and went out again (We were out here for the lake not for the indoors 😀)

Upon using a different route to get to the beach we landed on a pretty spot at the neighbor's and got comfortable.

When we were done taking photos we went strolling along the beach and saw these sights:

“Even in brokennes you can still spot love”- Ju’2020
...A log with a love heart on it. Wonder if it was carved in there by someone or if it was just naturally shaped out that way somehow...

Throughout the time we were here we continuosly spotted boats in the water and along the beach- either being rowed, housing a fisherman's nets and stuff or just sitting by the beach. We were also approached with fish for sale freshly from the lake, mostly small fish called mbaba/blue fish. We didn't buy any.

The beach this side is not private. It's shared with the locals who come out to wash their dishes, their clothes, and themselves (yep, they bring soap and take a bath right there- with a bit of clothing still on). So if you're looking for a more private beach experience don't go to Nkhudzi Beach Lodge or any of the Lodges along the Nkhudzi Bay.

I found that the water was still clean enough to justify swimming in (or really just playing in it because we both can't swim)...

Also spotted this dog enjoying the waves splashing on him (her?) on a hot Mangochi morning

This place was totally my kind of place, with a large water body and a mountain in such close proximity. I wished I could go hiking! But the mountains this side seem very rocky plus we spotted a monkey and no way was I going to be meeting other living things in the wild other than humans. I'm not even a huge pet person I wouldn't know how to handle an untamed animal lol. Packing a sports shoe for possible mountain climbing crossed my mind when I was packing but I let it pass.

The view from the beach to the opposite side

By the time we got back from our long stroll we were lunch hungry but time was going quite slow in Mangochi and it wasn't lunch time yet, so we ordered a small Chambo with nsima and told them we'd be ready to have it at 12 (we were asked what time we'd like to eat, which I found to be pretty awesome...especially when they delivered. It always excites/pleases me when people keep time!)

Meanwhile, as we waited under the beach hut two young boys approached us with bwemba (tamarind) for sale and Maness got us some, and arranged it thus in the sand...

After a while it was lunch time! This meal too was THOROUGHLY enjoyed, and it was the cheapest meal on the menu at MK3,200 each.

Our neighbors ordered roasted (or something) fish to have by the beach and also for lunch. I like the idea where instead of meat you do fish because- Lake life 😊

Then a bit later in the day, after hanging by the beach a while and recording ourselves singing, we were ready to go back into the water. This time under the hot burning sun.

Modest under water :)

When all the swimming was done we went back to our chalet, changed and went to the shops to stock up on water and other foodstuffs again. When we got back we ordered one plate of dinner to share- nsima this time, with local chicken and yummy green veggies. The nsima was ALOT so it was enough to share between us and the ndiwo was always a lot so the whole meal was enough for both of us. Successful cost cutting- check...

Day 3 should be up shortly.

Comments are still welcome! And please let me know what to call ndiwo in English other than "relish" if there's any other word.

Cheers!
